Six Sigma and Employees Safety – a Novel Approach

Human beings are capable of operating effectively in a limited range of environmental conditions, with combination of temperature, humidity, air speed and work rate. Safety primarily is the legal and moral obligation of employees. Employees must know the uses of safety measures and it reduces industrial unrest, indiscipline, injuries and major accidents. In the current scenario, even with the availability of well developed technologies, Industries/companies are facing major accidents which directly lead to loss of employees (equate to defect). In recent years many business firms have focused on three priorities viz. quality cost and cycle time in order to become worldclass companies. For companies to create an injury free workplace, it is necessary to develop strategies that move them towards world-class safety performance. This work is done to study the employees’ awareness on safety measures and to examine the satisfaction level of employees regarding existing safety measures. This work also analyzes the reachable level of the safety training programmes and some of the safety measures for improving the organization were also suggested. Three chi square tests were done for analyzing the relationship between employees at various levels of an organization. DMAICSix Sigma process and fishbone analysis tool was adopted as measurements in reducing the employee injury rate thereby making workplace safety. The result shows that management commitment and employee ownership of the Six Sigma programme is the key to continuous improvement and the development of a safety culture and a learning organization.
